DRAINS AND SEWER LINES

Clogged Drains in Hendersonville, NC: Is It One Fixture or the Main Line?

The answer to one question, how many fixtures are affected, decides almost everything else about a drain call.

  • Sewer, inside city, all usage: $8.91 per 1,000 gallons
  • 4-inch gravity sewer service installation: $1,600.00
  • MSD tap fee information: 828-225-8209
  • Hendersonville Water & Sewer: 828-697-3063

City and county rates and fees, not plumber prices. Every figure links to its source.

Question A: how many drains are slow?

One slow sink or one tub that drains badly almost always means a clog in that fixture's trap or branch line: hair, soap, grease or a dropped object. A plunger, a hand auger or removing and cleaning the trap often fixes it, and a plumber's visit for a single fixture is usually short.

Several fixtures slow at once, especially on the lowest floor, points further down the system. If the toilet gurgles when the washing machine drains, or water comes up in the shower when the toilet is flushed, the blockage is likely in the building drain or the sewer line leaving the house.

A backup in the lowest drain of the house is the signal to stop using water. Every flush and every load of laundry upstairs has to go somewhere, and if the main is blocked it comes out at the lowest opening.

Question B: what is on the other end of your pipe?

Inside Hendersonville, most homes drain to City sewer, which is billed on metered water at $8.91 per 1,000 gallons inside the city. Some areas of the county are served by the Metropolitan Sewer District, and many rural homes use septic tanks. The plumber needs to know which, because a backup on a septic system can be a full tank or a failed drain field rather than a pipe.

The county permit FAQ lists Hendersonville Water & Sewer at 828-697-3063 and the Metropolitan Sewer District at 828-225-8209 for tap fee questions, which also makes them the offices to ask if you are not sure who serves your property.

If you are on septic, the county FAQ directs septic sizing questions to the Environmental Health Department at 828-694-6060.

Question C: cable, jet or camera?

Cabling, also called snaking or rodding, pushes a rotating cutter through the line to open a blockage. It is fast and often enough for a soft clog. Jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the pipe walls and is better for grease and buildup. A camera inspection shows what is actually in the line: roots, a broken section, a sag that holds water, or an offset joint.

Ask the plumber which method they plan to use and why, and whether a camera inspection is included or priced separately. If a line backs up more than once in a year, a camera inspection is usually worth it, because repeated cabling of a broken pipe treats the symptom.

Ask for the video or still images if a camera is used. They are the evidence if you need a repair quote from a second plumber.

Question D: does the repair need a permit?

Clearing a clog does not change the plumbing. Replacing or rerouting a section of drain or sewer line can. Henderson County's FAQ says a plumbing permit is required for any addition, excluding same size and capacity, or change in the design of plumbing.

The county's 2026-2027 fee schedule lists the plumbing trade permit at $75.00. If a sewer line repair also involves digging in a public right of way or at the tap, the utility will have its own rules and fees; ask before the excavator arrives.

When a new sewer service is needed, the City of Hendersonville fee schedule lists a 4-inch gravity sewer service installation at $1,600.00 and a 6-inch installation at $2,000.00. Those are City charges, not the plumber's price for the private side of the line. See the tap fee checklist.

Question E: what not to pour down the drain

Grease, oil and fat are the classic cause of kitchen line clogs, because they cool and harden on the pipe wall and catch everything that follows. Wipe pans with a paper towel before washing, and put cooled grease in the trash.

Wipes marketed as flushable, paper towels, dental floss and cotton swabs do not break down like toilet paper and are frequent causes of toilet and main line blockages. On a septic system they also fill the tank faster.

Chemical drain openers can damage older pipes and make the plumber's job more hazardous. If you have already used one, say so when you call.

Question F: a backup that raised the water bill

A drain clog does not normally move the water bill, because the meter measures what comes in, not what goes out. But a toilet that keeps running after a clog is cleared, or a valve damaged during the backup, will. If the next bill is high, run the meter test on the leak detection checklist.

Running toilets are listed in the City's 2026 leak policy as hidden fixture failures that can qualify for an adjustment, and for leaks returned to the sewer the adjustment covers water and sewer together. See the leak adjustment checklist.

For a backup with sewage on the floor, treat cleanup carefully, keep people and pets away, and photograph the damage before it is removed if you plan to file an insurance claim.
